World No. 1 Russian tennis sensation, Dinara Safina and World No. 2 tennis icon Serena Williams are the first players to qualify for the Sony Ericsson Championships – Doha 2009, in the singles competition. They will join The 30 – year – old Zimbabwean, Cara Black and the 33 year – old American, Liezel Huber, The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour World No.1 doubles team, who became the first team to qualify for the doubles team competition. The event that will be held in Doha, Qatar from the 27th of October – 1st of November will gather the world’s top eight singles players and top four doubles teams from the 2009 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Season. The remarkable players will compete for the much desired Sony Ericsson Championships title and a share of the $4.45 million in prize money.

The Moscow native, Safina will make her second appearance at the Sony Ericsson Championships, while it is the ninth time Serena qualifies.
Having won in 2007 and 2008 the Sony Ericsson Championships trophy, Cara and Huber will make their third consecutive appearance at the Championships in an attempt to win for the third time in a row the prestigious title.
All four players have had an incredible year, but 2009 without a doubt belongs to Safina since she became World No. 1 for the first time in her career on April 2009. She won titles at Premier events Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome and Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open and reached the finals at the Australian Open and Roland Garros. This brilliant tennis player has won to date, 12 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Single tittles and is set to pass the $9 million mark in her career prize this year.

Serena Williams the 27 – year – old American has also had a spectacular 2009 season and lots to celebrate, having won two Grand Slam singles titles (Australian Open and Wimbledon). The tennis fashionista leads the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour prize money leaders with $3,950,466 and has become the first professional female athlete to reach the $23-million mark in any professional sports league as the all – time prize money leader on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.

The Sony Ericsson Championships is the most prestigious and important tournament in professional women's tennis. It is the final event in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, in which only the very best players in the world participate. Since 2008 Doha have hosted the event and it will keep carrying out this amazing challenge until 2010 before passing the flag to Istanbul, Turkey scheduled to host the event from 2011 - 2013.

The Championships were first played in 1972 and since then the event has become an international phenomenon generating an immense amount of media coverage, unrivalled by any other women's only sports event.
