Dementieva Stunned Venus Williams
27 Nov 2009
Elena Dementieva overcame Venus Williams on Tuesday evening during the round robin stage of the Sony Ericsson Championships – Doha 2009.
Dementieva has lost to Williams nine of their 11 previous meetings, including six straight loses. At the beginning of the game it seemed that Williams was going for her 7th consecutive victory over Dementieva as she was leading the game 6-2, 3-1, but fifth seed Dementieva recovered her trust in her game and fought back to take the second set beating Williams by 3-6, 7-6 (6) 6-2.
Williams was also the defending champion in Doha, having taken the season-ending title a year ago. Thanks to the round robin format however, the 29-year-old still has a shot at winning; she plays her second match Wednesday.
"I'm going to come back tomorrow and just improve my game, that's what it's all about in round robin tennis. It's my second time playing round robin. Now I'll see what it's like to be in this kind of competition for real.", said a positive Venus Williams.
