THE WTA CHAMPIONSHIPS – DOHA 2010

Qatar will host for the third year in a row the most anticipated WTA Championships – Doha 2010. The event will be held from the 26th – 31st of October at the courts of the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex. The world’s top eight singles players and the top four doubles teams from the WTA Tour 2010 Season will compete for the much desired Championships’ title and a share of the $4.45 million in prize money. Complete list of qualified players will be announced gradually starting in September by the WTA based on the accumulated points during the season in all the different tournaments and in the four Grand Slams.
 
The WTA Championships is the most prestigious and important tournament in professional women's tennis. It is the final event in the WTA Tour, in which only the very best players in the world participate. Since 2008 Doha have hosted the event and this year will be the last edition before passing the flag to Istanbul, Turkey scheduled to host the event from 2011 - 2013.
 
Last year’s event had a massive attendance of 35,000 tennis fans during its six days run, while millions more around the globe enjoyed the power of the WTA Season-Ending Championships – Doha 2009 at the comfort of their homes, watching Serena Williams claimed the title in the Singles competition and Spanish team of Nuria Llagostera Vives – Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez winning the Doubles Crown.

I also would like to take this opportunity to thank the WTA for their support and letting Qatar be the host country of the Championships”, said Mr. Nasser Ghanem Al Khelaifi, President of the Qatar Tennis Federation,

The Championships were first played in 1972 and since then the event has become an international phenomenon generating an immense amount of media coverage, unrivalled by any other women's only sports event.
