Smash Championship kicks off on Monday

The 2011 Smash Academy Championships will kick off on Monday at Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.

The tournament organized by Smash Tennis Academy and Qatar Tennis federation (QTF) will see more than 300 players battling for 18 titles in different age categories.

The tournament was a huge success in its first two editions and this year’s edition is expected to be the most successful with the high number of participants and the lucrative prize money.

In addition to the Men and Ladies Singles and Doubles competitions, there is the mixed doubles and veterans (+45 years) singles and doubles.

On the junior and youth levels, boys will battle for seven titles singles (U10-U12-U14-U18) and doubles (U12-U14-U18), while girls will go for singles (U10-U12-U14-U18).

“Smash Academy Championships is one of the most important tournaments for QTF on the national level, the competition is always high in this tournament, and the increased number of participants this year proves that Tennis is becoming more and more popular in Qatar and the number of players is increasing specially on junior and youth levels” Said Mr. Khaled Al Khelaifi, Head of Qatar national teams.

“All Qatar national team players are taking part in this year’s tournament, they will face players of different levels and different styles of play, and that will surely give them huge experience and will also allow the national team coaches to evaluate the progress of their players by the end of the 2010-11 season before focusing on the summer training camps” he added.

Meanwhile Mr. Heikel Lakhdar Administrative and Financial manager of Smash Tennis Academy was glad to see the high number of participants this year and he said “We are proud to continue our cooperation with QTF in organizing this tournament for the third consecutive year, such tournaments are vital for the development of players in Qatar specially on junior and youth level, allowing them to gain invaluable experience”.

“All our academy players and we expect the competition to be very tense, the prizes offered this year are the highest since the launching of the tournament in 2009 and that will also raise the competition level of course, I hope everyone will enjoy the tournament”.

Smash Tennis Academy launched in June 2006 to promote the sport of tennis in Qatar and provide the latest professional methods of training in order to create local players who can compete on professional level in the future.
