Royal Visit to Qatar Tennis Federation on National Sports Day

February 14, 2012 - DOHA, Qatar – National Sports Day in Qatar saw various sporting activities throughout Doha and one very special visitor came to the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex. H.H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani visited the site of this week’s Qatar Total Open to participate in various activities with children on court. He was joined in the festivities by Nasser Al Khelaifi, Qatar Tennis Federation President: world No. 1 WTA player Victoria Azarenka: 2011 Qatar Total Open runner-up Caroline Wozniacki: former Doha champion Martina Hingis; and Tournament Director Karim Alami.

Nasser Al Khelaifi said of the visit, “It is an honor to have H. H. Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani join us at the Khalifa International Tennis Center on this very special National Sports Day. His support of our events is very important and today he spent time playing tennis with the children and the WTA players. Qatar is a sports center and today highlights the magnificent growth sport has had in the country.”

The Qatar National Team and coaches were present for various activities with school children. Boys and girls were treated to tennis drills, table tennis, clowns, stilt walkers, and fun in the Kid’s Zone. The National Team was also part of events for all ages and skill levels at Katara and at the Corniche – all including drills, skills tests, and prizes.

The royal visit to the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex was a key part in the various activities organized throughout the city to highlight the importance of fitness and showcase the growth and interest of sports in Qatar.  National Sports Day coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Qatar Total Open, which has brought the world’s best female tennis players to Doha for the WTA Premier event.
