Davydenko The Hero
09 Jan 2010
The Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2010 couldn’t have a better ending. Against all predictions World No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko defeated World No. 2 and second seeded Spanish Rafael Nadal. The first set of the match saw Rafael Nadal leading 6-0. At that point all odds were with Nadal who seemed to be the absolute winner. During the second set, Nikolay had a spectacular recovery making the set very hard for Nadal to win. The entire second set saw both titans battling it out to win the set that eventually ended 6-6 leading to an inevitable tie break.
During the third set Nadal started leading 3-1, but Davydenko took over again winning the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 0-6, 7-6(8), 6-4 and his 20th ATP World Tour title.
Davydenko won last December the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London defeating Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, making him the second player to defeat them during the same tournament on two different occasions after David Nalbandian achieved the same at ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Madrid and Paris in 2007.
