January 5, 2013 – Doha, Qatar – France’s Richard Gasquet has won the title at the Qatar ExxonMobil Open 2013 by defeating Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3. The world No. 10 Gasquet, seeded No. 2 at the tournament, faced qualifier Jan Hernych in the first round, and had a straight set victory over the Czech player before having to face Slovenia’s Grega Zemlja. Zemlja was looking to knock out the Frenchman but Gasquet battled back for a 6-7(7), 6-4, 7-6(3) victory. He then went on defeat both Lukas Lacko and qualifier Daniel Brands in straights sets. In meeting Davydenko in the final, currently ranked No. 44 in the world, Gasquet had faced his opponent five times before, defeating him three of those times. He now increases his head-to-head record, 4-2. Gasquet previously played Doha in 2006 and becomes the fourth Frenchman to win the Qatar ExxonMobil Open title, joining the ranks of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (2012), Nicolas Escude (2004) and Fabrice Santoro (2000).

Gasquet said of the win, “I’m very happy. It’s normal. I win in Doha. It’s a big tournament. It’s the first of the year. As I said, a lot of big players won here, like Federer, a lot of big guys, big names.”

Nasser Ghanim Al Khelaifi, President of the Qatar Tennis Federation said, “This year, for our 21st edition of the Qatar ExxonMobil Open, we had a great tournament. The final which saw Richard Gasquet play against Nikolay Davydenko was a fantastic match.”

Of Gasquet’s win, Al Khelaifi said, “I was particularly very happy to see Richard Gasquet win his first Qatar ExxonMobil Open title, which is also his first title of the year. Richard performed very strongly all week and I hope this is the beginning of a great year of tennis for him. I look forward to seeing him defend his title next year.”

Al Khelaifi went on to say of the tournament, “I would like to especially thank ExxonMobil and all the great sponsors supporting the event, as well as the great staff and volunteers who have made this year’s tournament another great success.”
