National Sports Day at the Qatar Total Open 2013

February 12, 2013 – Doha, Qatar – As National Sports Day was celebrated all across the country on Tuesday, the day of activity and festivity was celebrated at the Qatar Total Open in a big way. With the top female tennis players in the world playing at the WTA Premier 5 event in Doha this week, the tournament capitalized on their presence in the country to highlight National Sports Day.

H.H Sheikh Tamim Bin HamadBin KhalifaAl Thani, Heir Apparent, joined Qatar Tennis Federation President, Nasser Ghanim Al-Khelaifi, at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.

Title sponsor, Total Qatar, held their corporate tennis tournament final at the Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex on the morning of National Sports Day. Total Qatar ran an internal tennis tournament over the past few weeks, leading to the men’s and women’s finals which were held on Tuesday. Chair and line umpires from the Qatar Total Open officiated over the matches. World No. 1, Victoria Azarenka, joined the winners, Natalie Hamad andLaurent Menayfor the prize presentation. Total is committed to social development and hosting their own corporate tournament gets their employees involved in the various initiatives they are fostering.

Qatar Total Open Tournament Director, Saad Al Mohannadi, said of Total’s presence during National Sports Day, “Total hosting their corporate final for their own tennis tournament here at the Khalifa Tennis Center during the Qatar Total Open is quite fitting. They have shown how invested they are in the growth of sport in Qatar with their sponsorship of various events – both big and small – and we are honored to be able to host their final on National Sports Day, while also hosting the Qatar Total Open.”

A Schools Festival was also held on the morning of National Sports Day at the Qatar Total Open. School children were introduced to the fundamentals of the sport and enjoyed various tennis and fitness drills.WTA playersSimonaHalep of Romania and Shuai Zhang of China were on hand to play with the children and take photos.

Mohannadi continued, “Qatar National Sports Day is the perfect platform to expose youngsters to all that tennis has to offer. They can experience the fun of the game and be inspired to pursue their own tennis goals. Seeing all these children outside enjoying fitness and tennis is real inspirational because our aim is to develop the next tennis star of Qatar.”
