Sisters Serena and Venus Williams will clash at Finals
29 Nov 2009
After only 45 minutes on the court Serena Williams moved to the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Championships – Doha 2009 after defeating Caroline Wozniacki. The American player won the first set against  Wozniacki by 6-4 and lost the first game of the second set but right after Wozniacki retired with a left abdominal strain. The player had been suffering from a leg injury throughout the week.
Williams went 3-0 in her round robin group, losing just one set, to Venus Williams - that match went the absolute distance, though, with her big sister even holding match point at 6-5 in the third set before falling, 57 64 76(4). But apart from that Williams has not lost a set the whole week in wins over Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva and, albeit by retirement, Wozniacki.
As for Venus, she went the distance in every single one of her round robin matches and continued to play the Marathon Woman in the semis Saturday, edging Jelena Jankovic in two hours and 34 minutes, 57 63 64.
Williams and Jankovic, the No.7 and No.8 seeds at the season-ending event, were just about dead even throughout the match, with Williams dictating play for the most part and Jankovic using her footspeed and guile to draw as many errors as possible. But as Williams put together a -6 differential, Jankovic was not as clean with -17, and after a tight third set in which she had to rally from 0-2, the defending champ won.
