Nicole Melichar of the United States and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands on Friday won the Qatar Total Open doubles title. Melichar and Schuurs beat Monica Niculescu of Romania and Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia 6-2, 2-6, 10-8 on the Centre Court at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex.
Melichar and Schuurs won $$25,230 for their winning form in the Qatari capital. The losing finalists won $17,750.
Earlier, seeded second for the 16-team field in Doha, Melichar and Schuurs beat Andreja Klepac of Slovakia and Sania Mirza of India in the semifinals played on Thursday. Earlier in the tournament, the winning pair beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands and her American partner Jessica Pegula in the quarterfinals.
Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan and Barbora Strýcová of the Czech Republic were the defending champions but chose not to participate in this year’s event. The doubles final took place before the singles semifinals at the same court on Friday.
